The Honda CR-V is one of the best-selling SUVs for 21 years now. It's been around now since the 1997 model year, and the current version of this massively successful compact SUV crossover is part of what is now the fifth-generation which was launched here in late 2016 as a 2017 model year. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the CR-V has won more awards over the year than even Honda can probably remember. Most recently, the latest generation of the CR-V has won Car and Driver's "Editor's Choice Awards," Edmunds' "2018 Buyers Most Wanted Award," and Autoweb's "2018 Buyer's Choice Awards" for the best utility vehicle and small SUV of the year categories. What's the secret of the Honda's incredible success then? Let's take a closer look at the 2019 Honda CR-V
to find out.
2019 Honda CR-V styling
Honda has decided to stay relatively conventional with the styling of the CR-V. It's instantly identifiable as a CR-V, it's definitely fresh and modern, but it doesn’t look like something straight from a science fiction movie set sometime in the distant future. The Honda hits a real sweet spot of being distinctive and instantly recognizable without being polarizing and alienating some buyers. It's certainly evolved over the years and the current model is definitely sportier than its predecessors.
2019 Honda CR-V engines and performance
Entry level LX versions of the CR-V still come with the familiar 2.4-liter inline-four engine, which develops 184 horsepower and 180 lb.-ft. of torque and comes mated to a CVT transmission. Like all versions of the Honda, front-wheel drive is standard with all-wheel drive available as an option. One of the biggest changes to the winning CR-V formula ushered in with this fifth-generation is the 1.5-liter turbo-four which is now standard in EX, EX-L and Touring trim levels. It's the first turbocharged powerplant to grace the CR-V, and it brings a healthy 190 horsepower and 179 lb.-ft. of torque to the party along with decent fuel economy and performance. Even with the turbo-four the CR-V isn't a race car driving experience by any means, but that's not what it's meant to be. Instead, Honda has tuned the suspension and handling for a confident, competent and capable ride and drive. And at highway speeds the whole experience is calm, smooth and comfortable.
2019 Honda CR-V interior features
The interior of the CR-V is probably as responsible for its ongoing success as anything, and with the latest version Honda has really hit one out of the park. The cabin is everything buyers want from a vehicle like this. It's spacious, comfortable, stylish, extremely well put together and there's that all-important commanding seating position for the driver which has certainly helped make SUVs as popular as they are these days. Honda hasn't bothered trying to squeeze a third-row seat into the CR-V, and that means there's plenty of room for five adults and good amount of cargo space too. The trunk area behind the rear seats is a very useful 39.2 cu.-ft., and that can be expanded to a cavernous 75.8 cu.-ft. with the rear seats folded away when not in use.
